Born a slave, Sojourner Truth, through her words and actions, influenced the lives of Americans and people around the world. Her story is told in a new and innovative way as the performers in this assembly play the part of writers intent on penning a unique version of Sojourner’s life. Using a little “creative magic” the writers find themselves on a trip back through time with Sojourner as their spirit guide. They experience the danger of living as blacks in America during Sojourner’s lifetime and witness first-hand her exchanges with family, abolitionists, spiritualists, suffragettes, the Freedman’s Bureau, and her friends in Battle Creek, Michigan. A question and answer period follows the performance and is an integral part of this program. Alicia Washington brings Sojourner Truth to life, not only as a woman of extraordinary courage and electrifying presence, but also as a gifted and passionate human being.
