Respect for the Environment Little Hawk, dressed in traditional Native American attire, is like a museum exhibit come alive as he plays his wooden flutes and tells stories of the lessons he learned from his grandparents. In this program, Little Hawk speaks to his audience about the respect that Native Americans have for the earth - and his belief that all humans need to honor, cherish and preserve it. He also shows how his grandfather taught him to use rocks, gourds. conch shells, and more, to make instruments and other useful things. Students are invited to participate in Little Hawk's Rock and Rattle Band, and he asks them to join his "Good-Heart Tribe" and pledge to make the world a better place. This program could include a Plant-A-Tree Ceremony or students could do a dance for preservation of our environment. | Chris Marksbury; CM Photos | The Science Of Sound | Musical instrument inventor Jody Kruskal uses homemade instruments as physical models for explaining the science of sound. Concepts of vibration, frequency, relative pitch, instrument classification, and rhythm are explained in simple language employing instrumental and vocal examples. The audience is engaged and participates throughout the program, as they learn that wonderful music can come from found objects, such as paper towel tubes, soda straws and coffee cans. A wonderful example of the recycle/reduce/reuse concepts, as Jody encourages students to make their own instruments in the classroom and at home. Grades K-12 |
