Project Impact

Lyric Soprano Yvette Lewis demonstrates how opera can be used as a teaching tool and integrated into the curriculum in Reading, Creative Writing, History, Math and Science.

Operas such as Carmen, La Boheme and Hansel and Gretel are explored and Yvette explains how they may be used for such activities as Creative Writing, Creative Movement and History lessons. 

Operas in America and operas for the very young are also discussed. Teachers come away with ideas of how to make understanding opera easy for their students and suggested activities for many areas of study.

Use the Arts to expand curricula by discovering effective ways to influence such subjects as: Science, Social Studies, Math, Literature, Language and Career Education.

Mark Stankiewicz has a talent for making connections between subject areas and has developed interdisciplinary lessons that demonstrate the myriad of connections between art and the world around us.

Teachers will take away ideas and materials to help them present these lessons to their students in an exciting and creative way.

Learn to use forms of visual arts and writing techniques to integrate and infuse class curriculum, such as social studies, conflict resolution, language arts, playwriting, story writing, poetry and theater arts. Both masks and puppets allow for students to speak with their “other voice.”  While book-art translates words into pictures. 

Maskmaking:  Participants will receive instruction on utilizing envisioning techniques to structure a poem and translate meaningful details of the poem into mask form.  The history and origins of masks will also be explored.

Puppetry:  Using simple materials and entering an imaginative world of movement, shape and color, participants will construct personalized rod puppets. They will then pair off with one another and utilize their puppets to write a short conflict resolution narrative.

Book Art-Paper Engineering: (Pop-Ups)  - This workshop uses a writing component and hands on construction of a paper-engineered page. Participants will learn and utilize the 90 degrees, basic box format; and/or 180 degrees, spine fold or backbone format and create a paper-engineered page based on their writing.
