| Self Portrait - Building Drawing Skills |
This 2-3 week residency begins with an introductory drawing lesson on breaking larger drawings into smaller pieces. Using the knowledge gained from the introduction, students will draw a small graph over a photo of themselves. A larger graph will be lightly drawn on drawing paper and the students will be asked to copy square by square from the original. They will then learn how to use drawing pencils for shading and apply that information to create shadows in their drawings. Grades 6-12 |  | So This Is Opera | This is an opera immersion program designed to give students an in-depth, hands-on introduction to the world of opera. Lyric soprano and music educator, Yvette Lewis, spends 5-10 days in the school working with students. A planning meeting with the artist will be held, and a professional development workshop for teachers is included to give an overview of the program and provide activities that can be used in the classroom to complement the residency. This will include creative writing, art, drama and research activities that correspond to each opera being studied. An assembly, performed by Ms. Lewis, serves as an introduction to the residency. Ms. Lewis will then meet with each grade level to work on an opera they are assigned to study. Students become familiar with the story and learn up to three selections from the opera in the original language. Classroom instruments will be provided for students to play accompaniments to the music learned. A student performance for parents is the showcase at the end of the residency. Grades K-5 |  Photo by Chris Marksbury; CM Photos| Songwriting With Scot Cannon | This 5-7 day residency immerses children in the art of songwriting. With the help of teachers, each class participating will create the lyrics for a song. This can be done during their language arts periods and is a wonderful creative writing/poetry project.When completed, the lyrics will be sent to artist Scot Cannon, who will write basic melodies and create music tracks for each class’ lyrics. In the first class of the residency, Scot introduces the song and the group begins the work together adjusting the lyrics, melody and phrasing to make it come together and feel right. Mime and movement is incorporated into every class and many of the songs, as well. The residency continues with the children involved in the process of editing and changing their song, even as recording begins. Children enjoy the “recording studio” atmosphere and are as excited about the mechanics of recording the song as in hearing their creation playing back. Scot completes the editing and polishes the recording before presenting the finished songs on CD to the school. Depending on the scope of this residency, it could be structured to also include a video of the children performing their songs or a presentation at the end. Grades K-8
