Sal D’Andrea brings his talent, educational background, enthusiasm and a drum for every participant to this unique workshop. Children are encouraged to focus, listen, cooperate, create, relax, and have a whole lot of fun! A brief discussion about different types of drums and how they make sound is followed by a jam session bursting with high energy. Students collaborate on different rhythms, “drum” their names and get a real workout. Drumming allows them to communicate and express themselves in a non-verbal way. This very interactive workshop builds camaraderie and fosters teamwork, as students take turns leading and following. Participants come away happy, energized and with a sense of satisfaction at being able to play their drums and follow a beat – even if they have never played before. Grades 4-12 & Adult Curriculum Connections: Health & Physical Education, Social Studies | | ShakeUp Shakespeare | “But, for my own part, it was Greek to me.” - William Shakespeare How many students have said the very same thing about Shakespeare!? Amy Ferrante & Alithea Phillips believe that by introducing Shakespeare at a young age, they can make students’ first experiences rich, thrilling, accessible, and fun. Combining teaching skills with acting talents, these gifted artists capture the attention of their audience in the first moments of the program. Children are welcomed into an exciting environment that encourages creative freedom, while providing a foundation for students to develop an interest in heightened language and complex ideas they can relate to. It also opens up worlds and places that are beyond the scope of their schools and neighborhoods. One- and two-day workshops are available and provide a full and dynamic experience. Macbeth: Grades 3 & 4 All The World’s A Stage: Grades 4 - 6 Curriculum Connection: Language Arts | | Sound The Trumpets | Brass tubing bent into a spiral shape, tapered and flared in the correct places, with 3 valves that open and close – and what a royal sound it makes when in the hands of an artist! This workshop takes an up-close look at the trumpet - an instrument that dates back to at least the 1500s and is used in almost all styles of music. Doug Haislip will guide students through the history of the trumpet from the conch shell to the modern day piccolo, and explore sound production and sound waves using a “hose-a-phone.” Demonstrations of various sized trumpets, with numerous musical pieces performed, make this an educational, interactive, and entertaining workshop. Also great as a small assembly (max 100) for schools and adult audiences. Grades K-8 & Adullts
